'The Hunger Games' In 2012: Our Five Forecasts

From the film's premiere to casting 'Catching Fire,' Hobnobbing takes a look at what to look forward to this year.

The past year boasted a cornucopia of "Hunger Games" highlights for fans to chew on, from the casting of Jennifer Lawrence as gritty heroine Katniss Everdeen to the first full-length trailer to the recent debut of Taylor Swift's soundtrack song "Safe and Sound." But as bountiful as 2011's harvest was, 2012 will offer a bumper crop of news from the big-screen adaptation of Suzanne Collins' dystopian tome as it finally hits theaters March 23.

Though our calls to Greasy Sae's Psychic Hotline have gone unanswered, we have a few educated guesses about what the new year holds for Panem's people. Read on for our five forecasts:

1. One more trailer
With just about two and a half months to go until the first film's debut, we'd bet a silver parachute that fans will get to feast on one more look at Katniss, Peeta and Gale before the tributes enter the arena. What another clip would include, well, we're less sure about that, but we wouldn't mind a closer look at life in District 12 or a more detailed glimpse at the other 22 tributes.

2. A full soundtrack announcement
Swift, the Civil Wars, the Decemberists and Arcade Fire's husband/wife duo of Win Butler and Regine Chassagne have all been secured for the T-Bone Burnett-produced soundtrack, but we suspect a few more artists will enter the fray before all is said and sung. I've already made my plea for Florence and the Machine, while NextMovie suggested acts like Snow Patrol and Regina Spektor for the much-anticipated album. We'll keep our ears to the ground for this one.

3. The film's premiere
Unless the apocalypse comes early, March 23 will be a blessed day for "Hunger Games" acolytes, as the flick will finally blaze into theaters. We expect more than a few faithful to camp out at their local cineplex for a midnight showing. And we're more than ready to drool over whatever confections Lawrence wears on the red carpet during the movie's premieres and publicity circuit.

4. Casting "Catching Fire"
With the second "Hunger Games" installment already slated for a November 22, 2013, release (and an Oscar-winning writer being eyed for the script), we expect the follow-up to begin shooting in mid- to late 2012 — which means a whole new slew of casting calls! Where are you Finnick, Johanna, Beetee and Mags?

5. First look at "Catching Fire"
Asking for a celluloid sneak would be a stretch, but we don't think it's completely inconceivable to think a first snapshot might find its way to the Web by the final days of 2012. Here's hoping the "Catching Fire" director (whomever he/she will be) isn't afraid to take a cue from "Breaking Dawn" helmer Bill Condon, who released the first photographic teaser for the final "Twilight" installments over Thanksgiving in 2010. Happy holidays, "Hunger Games" fans?

'Akira' Movie Shut Down To Reassess Budget

Kristen Stewart is reportedly in talks to star alongside Garrett Hedlund in the manga adaptation.

Though "Akira" has had significant developments in recent months — including potentially adding Kristen Stewart to the cast — Warner Bros. has shut down production on the live-action adaptation of the classic anime and manga.

For years, "Akira" had been an on-again, off-again production, with the likes of Keanu Reeves and Albert Hughes involved at one point. But the most recent attempt at the film — with "Unknown" director Jaume Collet-Serra and "Harry Potter" screenwriter Steve Kloves retouching the script — made the most progress on the property to date, getting as far as casting Garrett Hedlund as Kaneda, the lead.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the story of the shutdown, citing a source close to the production. According to the report, Warner Bros. closed the Vancouver production offices in order to reassess the budget, which the studio feared was too high. Over the next two weeks, producers will meet with Collet-Serra to work on the script with an eye on reducing costs. Insiders claim that Warner Bros. is looking to reduce the $90 million budget to the realm of $60 million or $70 million.

The proposed $90 million was already half of what it was for Hughes' production. Lowering the budget to that level was one of the accomplishments under Collet-Serra's version of the film, along with casting Hedlund in the lead and eyeing high-profile stars for the supporting roles.

Kristen Stewart, Ken Watanabe and Helena Bonham-Carter were three of the stars in various stages of negotiations to join the film. The "Twilight" star had reportedly been offered the female lead as Kei, while Watanabe stepped up for the Colonel after Gary Oldman turned down the role.

Sources close to the production tell THR that despite the setback, "Akira" is far from dead, saying, "It's a very resilient movie. Warner Bros. just won't let it die."

Conrad Murray Sentenced To Four Years In Jail1675062

Former Michael Jackson doctor faces another hearing in January to potentially provide more than $101 million in restitution to the Jackson family.
By Gil Kaufman

Dr. Conrad Murray listens as he sits in court during his sentencing for the involuntary manslaughter of singer Michael Jackson at the Los Angeles Superior Court on November 29, 2011 in Los Angeles, California. Judge Michael E. Pastor sentenced Murray to four years in county jail for his involuntary manslaughter conviction of Jackson.

Former Michael Jackson doctor Conrad Murray was back in a Los Angeles courtroom on Tuesday morning (November 29), where he was ordered to serve the maximum of four years in county jail. The cardiologist, who was found guilty of one felony count of involuntary manslaughter November 7, was facing up to four years in state prison in the death of the pop icon, but due to recent changes to alleviate overcrowding in California prisons, the judge in the case said he was was unable to send the doctor to state prison for his crime.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor had leeway in the sentencing, with options ranging from probation to the full sentence, but in a lengthy ruling from the bench he said that Murray's lack of remorse and negligent behavior argued for the highest possible penalty. Do you think Conrad Murray deserved the maximum sentence? Let us know on Facebook. "He is and remains dangerous ... the request of probation is denied, the court imposes the high term of four years imprisonment in this case," Pastor said during the 90-plus minute hearing. Murray will serve his time in the Los Angeles County Jail, as well as pay nearly $900 in court fees and face another hearing in late January 2012 on a request by the prosecution to provide more than $101 million in restitution to the Jackson family. Murray was found guilty by a jury of one felony count of involuntary manslaughter after prosecutors convinced them that Murray's reckless use of the surgical anesthetic propofol led to the singer's death. Before Pastor's ruling, prosecutors not only asked for the maximum sentence, but also that Murray pay Jackson's children more than $100 million in restitution, which is the amount they believe the singer would have earned had he lived to perform his "This is It" comeback tour, in addition to nearly $2 million in funeral expenses. Prior to handing down the sentence, a peeved-looking Pastor answered a defense question regarding a last minute notice from the prosecution noting that two previous cases suggest that involuntary manslaughter could be considered a "serious" offense and thus should subject Murray to federal prison time. "I don't think these cases have any impact on the realignment statute," Pastor ruled, referring to the new rules regarding sentencing that he believed superseded the earlier cases. Attorney and friend Brian Panish read a statement from the Jackson family at the beginning of the proceedings. "There is now way to adequately describe the loss of our beloved father, son, brother and friend," Panish said. "We still look at each other in disbelief, is it really possible that he is gone? As Michael's parents we never could have imaged we would live to witness his passing. It is simply against the natural order of things. As his brothers and sisters we will never be able to hold, laugh, or perform again with our brother Michael. And as his children, we will grow up without a father, our best friend, our playmate and our dad. We are not here to seek revenge, there is nothing you can do today that will bring Michael back. But we will keep the love in our in our hearts that Michael embodied throughout his life. His passion was for unifying the world through the gift of his artistry. We respectfully request that you impose a sentence that reminds physicians that they cannot sell their services to the highest bidder and cast aside their Hippocratic oath to do no harm. As we all know from this tragedy, doing so can have devastating results. The bible reminds us that men cannot do justice they can only seek justice. And that is all we ask as a family and that is all that we can ask for here." As in the past, Murray, 58, sat stone-faced, listening to the statement and prosecutor David Walgren's quick rehashing of the facts in the case. "He looked out for himself and not Michael Jackson," Walgren said, going on to argue why the court should deny the defense's request for probation. He quoted Pastor's own comments about the dangerous nature of Murray's action following the verdict as evidence that Murray should face a more serious penalty than probation. He said Murray's abandonment of a vulnerable Jackson in the time of the singer's need, as well as the planning the doctor underwent to procure the propofol and to not keep clear medical records about their administration were also reasons to deny probation. "It is the people's position that prison is warranted," Walgren said, adding that it was Murray's negligent actions before, during and after Jackson's death, as well as his lack of remorse and failure to take personal responsibility — as evidenced in clip from a documentary interview nine days before the verdict in which he denied culpability — that call for the longer term. A number of Jackson's family members, including mother Katherine and siblings LaToya, Jermaine, Randy and Rebbie, were reportedly on hand for the court date. When asked by the judge if the new sentencing laws allowed Murray to be sent to prison for the full term, Walgren said they did not. While the defense did not call any witnesses to testify — and Murray did not wish to speak — defense attorney Ed Chernoff did reference more than 30 pages of support memorandum from friends, family and patients in his brief statements. He agreed that Murray's actions do warrant punishment, but asked how the court viewed the book of Murray's life, versus one chapter. "He shouldn't have done it," he said of Murray's actions. "We're going to be honest about vulnerability. Michael Jackson was a drug seeker and he sought it out from Dr. Murray who was wrong in providing it." Chernoff painted Jackson as a rich, powerful person who had the means to do whatever he wanted and asked the court to consider Murray's life before the doctor began working for Jackson. He described Murray's currently cloistered existence in jail in protective custody and asked, "but what about the rest of his life? What about before Michael Jackson asked for propofol?" he wondered, noting that for 56 years Murray had never run afoul of the law and had raised a family following his destitute beginnings on the island of Grenada. "Does any of that matter at all?" Chernoff asked dramatically as he unspooled his client's rise from poverty and what he described as a professional life dedicated to helping poor and disadvantaged patients. "I think it should matter," he answered. "But when the glow of vengeance has faded, he still is someone else's problem. And Dr. Murray can do things for the community on probation that he could never do sitting in that room." Pastor noted that he had discretion in sentencing in this case and that he took into account that both sides have said that Murray's actions did result in the death of Jackson, though pointedly noted that Murray did not take responsibility in the MSNBC documentary that aired days after the guilty verdict. Because the case involved criminal negligence, which requires more than carelessness or mistake in judgment, but reckless actions that result in death, Pastor said it was important to focus on those factors. "This is not a question about what might have happened or what if someone else had been involved if not for Dr. Murray," he said. "That is an insult to the medical profession. The fact is that Michael Jackson died because of the action of and the failure to perform the medical duties of Dr. Murray." The judge said he had taken into account the full story of Murray's life, but said the "unconscionable lies" to medical personnel and a series of "inconceivable" decisions the doctor made on June 25, 2009 jeopardized the life of his patient and superseded what the doctor had done before. "Why give probation to someone who is offended by the whole idea that that person is even before the court," he said, referring to a "failure of character" on behalf of Murray, most specifically, a secret recording the physician made of the singer that Pastor characterized as a type of "insurance policy" against a potential future conflict between the doctor and patient that seemed beyond the pale. The day before the sentence was handed down, Murray's mother, Milta Rush, reportedly wrote a letter to judge Pastor asking him for mercy, saying, "his [Murray's] compassion and his soft heartedness for others led to this dilemma." Pastor said he could find no reason to grant probation to Murray, whose actions he called a "gross, continuing deviation" from medical standards, and who he claimed is and remains a danger to the community. Without the legal authority to send Murray to state prison, Pastor said, "the court has determined that the appropriate term is the higher term of four years imprisonment ... because I find that Dr. Murray had abandoned his patient, who was trusting him ... he has absolutely no remorse." A future date in January was set to begin discussing the prosecution's request for restitution. After being given credit for 46 days of time served and good time credit, Murray was led out of the courtroom in handcuffs. The Los Angeles County Sheriff will determine how much time Murray will actually do in his equally overcrowded jail and Murray's lawyers have indicated that they plan to launch an appeal at a later date.

Taylor Swift In 'Les Miserables': Fans Weigh In

'I hope she can pull it off,' one fan tells MTV News.

Taylor Swift has reportedly been offered the role of Eponine in Tom Hooper's new "Les Miserables" movie, beating out more established actors including Lea Michele, Scarlett Johansson and Evan Rachel Wood. Opinion on the street (Broadway, of course) is mixed.

Pennsylvanian Molly Washok, 17, is very pleased with the prospect of seeing Swift as Eponine on the big screen. "I seriously love 'Les Miz.' It's a great Broadway musical," she said. "And I've seen Taylor Swift in shows and I love her so much. I'm a big fan of both, so it makes me excited."

Long Islander Katie Kendrick, 20, is also a fan of Ms. Swift but not as certain of her chops. "I love Taylor Swift — I bought her CDs, I have everything. But I'm not sure she'll be able to hit those notes that Eponine hits in her songs," Kendrick said.

If she's cast in "Les Miserables," Swift will join a group of A-list actors that includes Hugh Jackman, Helena Bonham Carter, Russell Crowe and Anne Hathaway. (Amanda Seyfried has reportedly been offered the role of Cosette.) Among these veterans, Kendrick noted, Swift would stand out as the novice.

"Taylor Swift has only been in one movie and it was 'Valentine's Day,' where she had a role for 10 minutes, tops. And all these other actors have been in numerous roles. They're very well known in the acting industry while Taylor Swift is known in the singing industry," she said. "I wish her luck, but I'm not sure she'll be able to live up to the expectations that have been set previously."

Keely Kwok, 21, from Hamilton, Ontario, is willing to give Swift the benefit of the doubt. "She does have an incredible voice, I'll give her that," Kwok said. "It's a really great musical, so I hope she can pull it off."

Twenty-one-year-old New Yorker Julia Menn was less diplomatic in her assessment of Swift's credentials. "There are so many better people to play that part," Menn said. "I'd prefer Evan Rachel Wood, actually. I think she'd be fantastic."

So would Menn see a Wood-less "Les Miserables" when it hits theaters this December? "Well, since Hugh Jackman's in it, yes, I would."

Michael Buble's Christmas Retains #1 Billboard Spot1676374

Adele's 21 and Justin Bieber's Under the Mistletoe snag #2 and #3 spots.
By Rob Markman

Wondering what gifts will await you on Christmas morning? Don't be surprised if Ol' St. Nick stuffs your stocking with a copy of Michael Bublé's Yuletide LP. The throwback singer sold almost 448,000 copies of his Christmas album this past week while shoppers rushed stores to snag gifts for their loved ones. The sales number was more than enough to once again perch Bublé atop the Billboard albums chart like a partridge in a pear tree and bring him that much closer to a double-platinum plaque, according to SoundScan.

Adele put in work as well, securing the #2 spot on the charts, as another 277,000 music lovers realized they should run out and buy her masterpiece 21, 43 weeks after its release. Justin Bieber's Under the Mistletoe (#3, 171,000), Lady Antebellum's Own the Night (#5, 81,000) and Drake's Take Care (#7, 77,000) all pushed past platinum this week, while the Black Keys' El Camino and Amy Winehouse's posthumous Lioness: Hidden Treasures remained in the top 10 in their second week of release. Nickelback's Here and Now (#6, 80,000), Andrea Bocelli's Concerto: One Night in Central Park (#8, 76,000) and "American Idol" winner Scotty McCreery's Clear as Day (#9, 66,000) rounded out the rest of the top 10. Soul vocalist Anthony Hamilton saw his fifth studio album, Back to Love, miss the top 10 in its debut week, landing in the #12 position by selling almost 63,000 copies. Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa's Mac & Devin Go to High School movie soundtrack was the week's second notable debut, but one would have to imagine that the duo expected to land higher than #29. Still, once the accompanying film is actually released in 2012, the album could potentially move up. It'll be interesting to see where veteran rappers Common and Young Jeezy will land next week with their respective albums, which were both released Tuesday.

So Long, Dallas! Kim Kardashian Gets Back to the LA Grind

Fresh off of a two-day trip to the Lone Star State, Kim Kardashian was spotted arriving back home as she touched down at LAX Airport in Los Angeles, CA this afternoon (January 5).

The E! reality beauty looked quite chicly dressed for her time in the skies, as she passed through the Tinseltown terminal clad in an all-black ensemble complete with knee-high boots and a 3/4 length coat.

Busily pecking away on her mobile phone as she finally hit the exits and approached her chauffeured ride, Miss Kardashian tweeted a goodbye message to the friendly Dallas residents prior to her Texas departure, as she wrote, "Its been real Dallas but there's nothing like Home Sweet Home! Back on my LA grind!"

As for her visit, Kim and sister Khloe packed in as much as possible over the forty-eight hours of togetherness, as the ladies went shopping, visited the Dallas World Aquarium and watched Khloe's husband Lamar Odom score a season-high 15 points during the Mavericks' 98-89 win over the Phoenix Suns.

Of sitting courtside with her big sis, Khloe blogged, "Last night I brought Kim to her very first Mavs game. We had so much fun together cheering on Lamar and his teammates. It's so nice having her in town."

Big Boi, Killer Mike, Pill Collabo Album In The Works

'Them two are rap greats and for them two to actually want to do a project with me, it's unbelievable,' Pill tells 'RapFix Live.'
By Rob Markman

Pill's situation with Rick Ross' Maybach Music Group may not have worked out, but the Atlanta spitter has his eyes set on a collaborative project with Killer Mike and OutKast's Big Boi.

"We working, we thinking about dropping a tape, honestly 'cause me and Big and all us we done did records already," Pill told "RapFix Live." "We thinking about droppin' a tape and then droppin' an album."

In February 2011, Killer Mike revealed that he, Big Boi and Pill were forming a group, which is still unnamed. There isn't much in the way of details, but Pill insists that the trio is putting something together.

"We already workin', we getting' it in. It's a full-time grind," he said. "Them two are rap greats and for them two to actually want to do a project with me, it's unbelievable."

The "Trap Goin' Ham" rapper made headlines earlier this week when he revealed to MTV News that despite his close affiliation with Rozay's MMG label and appearing on his Self Made compilation, Pill was never technically signed to Maybach. The MC, who charges that MMG's parent label, Warner Music Group (to which he is currently signed), never gave him a fair push on radio or TV. He is now looking to be released from Warner.

Still, Pill is far from being in the dumps. In the coming weeks, Pillionaire plans to drop his solo mixtape The Epidemic and then, of course, is the project with Killer Mike and Big Boi, which he is excited about. While Pill does acknowledge Mike's and Big's respective greatness, he makes it clear that he is no slouch on the mic.

"For other people to try to think that I'm not lyrical enough or I'm not as good a rapper — you got guys that everybody looks up to as rappers doin' a project with me," he said. "So you know I'm just ready for that sh-- to actually take off so we can show people what hip-hop look like in the flesh."

Are you looking forward to Pill's group album with Big Boi and Killer Mike? Let us know in the comments.
