Jennifer Hudson Channels Whitney Houston At The Grammys

Hudson pays tribute to the late singer with a simple-yet-stunning performance of 'I Will Always Love You.'

Sometimes, words just can't say it.

For much of the Grammy celebration, musicians shouted out their praises and adoration of Whitney Houston, who was found dead in her Beverly Hills hotel room on the eve of music's biggest night.

But it was Jennifer Hudson, a clear student of what Houston brought to the musical world, who expressed it best.

As usual, the awards show paid respects to the number of now-gone musicians and music executives, including British singer Amy Winehouse, Motown executive Esther Gordy Edwards, soul-music architect Nick Ashford and influential rapper Heavy D. Their music played, their images were shown, and a quiet — before an eruption of applause — fell over the house when they concluded with an image of Houston in a red dress, in her heyday, singing.

Then, the house went dark. And a lone spotlight shone down to reveal the newly svelte Hudson poised and ready to deliver what might very well be the night's best and most anticipated performance. She delivered the first a cappella notes of one of Houston's biggest hits, her remake of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You" from the "Bodyguard" soundtrack.

For her part, Hudson ran through the track— with its nearly impossible trickling of high and low notes — almost effortlessly. At times, it looked as if Hudson was blinking back tears.

She brought the house down with an emotional rendering of the song to a darkly lit house.

Houston was found dead at age 48 on Saturday, hours before her mentor Clive Davis' annual pre-Grammy bash. She was expected to attend the annual fete. The party went on as planned Saturday night, where Davis, Diddy, Alicia Keys and Tony Bennett all paid tribute to the fallen star. A tribute to Houston is also planned during Sunday's show, led by Jennifer Hudson and Chaka Khan.

Lady Gaga's Path To Album Of The Year Race

MTV News looks back on Mother Monster's huge year and her genre-busting, Grammy-nominated album.

Some artists, like Adele, release albums that are pure Grammy catnip thanks to instant-classic sounds that resonate with the Recording Academy's way-back contingent. Then there's Lady Gaga.

She's been a bridesmaid twice for Album of the Year at the Grammys, losing out on her first two releases. But with her third bid on Sunday, for Born This Way, Gaga appears to have made the kind of career-defining, big-idea album that Grammy voters could not deny. It had all the things the Academy loves in an Album of the Year nominee: ambition, deeply personal tracks that provide a glimpse at the artist's psyche, bold musical explorations, strong sales and chance to prove that they're hip enough to get what the kids are listening to. (Or, in some cases, a new album by Steely Dan.) And, indeed, BTW did have it all, from the jackhammer electronica of "Marry the Night" to the tango-lite grooves of "Americano," the techno attack of "Heavy Metal Lover," hints of biography in "Hair," the lighter-raising ballads in "Yoü and I" and "The Edge of Glory" and, of course, the title track, which served as both a dance-floor phenomenon and an empowerment anthem for the ages. The album, one of the most anticipated of 2011, not only crashed the charts with stellar sales figures of more than one million in its first week, but it also managed to once again bend the will of the music-buying public to meet her quirky, unpredictable muse. Gaga promised her fans that she was pouring everything she had into the disc and when it arrived, complete with a series of trippy, provocative videos that also pushed the envelope, they couldn't have asked for any more from their Mother Monster. Frequent musical collaborator producer Fernando Garibay said the recognition from the Recording Academy was a nice cherry-topper to a year of hard, hard work. "We worked on this album for so long and it was like our baby so it was more about if the fans would love it; that was the most important thing.," he told MTV News. "But of course, nominations, yeah, that's cool."

The first full-length effort from Gaga since her rise to international stardom, Born This Way allowed the singer to exorcise some demons, comment on her newfound fame and, of course, create the kind of over-the-top tracks that would lend themselves to equally eye-popping live performance. "This album was the most personal, the amount of detail that went into this record, the amount of passion and emotion from her and the team," Garibay said. "We all followed her lead on this, on every song ... how intense every avenue of making this record was for us, protecting the record, creative, conceptually, every song was a story towards the Born This Way theme." The video for the title track took the Best Female Video and Best Video With a Message at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards. In a year in which she kept turning heads with ever-more-insane red carpet walks, Gaga fittingly raised the bar further at the show, where she performed and accepted the Female Video Moonman as her male alter ego, Jo Calderone. In between those appearances, Gaga also managed to circle the globe with the Broadway-worthy Monster Ball Tour, on which she brought the new songs to life every night in a spectacle that was the visual equal of her studio experiments. Though she worked with her core team, which includes Garibay, producer RedOne and DJ White Shadow, Gaga also opened the doors to collaborations with late Bruce Springsteen saxophonist Clarence Clemons and classic rock producer Robert "Mutt" Lange and Queen guitarist Brian May, who helped give "Yoü and I" its epic, AM radio majesty. Gaga was so excited to record the album that she insisted on having a portable studio with her at all times to work on new music even as she toured the world for The Fame Monster, RedOne said. The road work paid off, as the album has sold more than 8 million copies worldwide, spinning off a bevy of hits, including the title track, "Marry the Night," "Judas," "Yoü and I" and "The Edge of Glory." And though he's been there before, RedOne added that getting another nod for the biggest Grammy honor of all is new every time. "It's an amazing thing to be nominated for the biggest thing in music industry," he said. "It's always a big honor. I get happy and I never want to get used to it." Chaos! Profanity! Wardrobe malfunctions! Don't miss our Grammy red-carpet live stream this Sunday, February 12, for a full three hours of mayhem, starting at 5 p.m. ET on MTV.com. Scarlett Johansson Wears a Bikini For a V-Day Cruise With Nate Naylor

Scarlett Johansson wore a bikini yesterday for a boat ride with her boyfriend Nate Naylor. They were joined by some friends for their voyage out on the ocean, and the group was seen opening bottles of wine and fishing. The couple are off enjoying a week-long getaway in Hawaii, where Scarlett was seen in a teal bikini Friday. Nate and Scarlett have reportedly been dating for six months, but they just went public as a duo earlier this month. He was by her side for a sweet day-date two weeks ago, but Scarlett brought her brother Hunter along as her date to an Obama fundraiser she cohosted with Vogue's Anna Wintour last Tuesday.

Katy Perry's 'Part Of Me' Joins All-Time Great Kiss-Offs

Singers from Adele to Justin Timberlake have sung stinging goodbyes.
By John Mitchell

The breakup song is a rite of passage for just about every singer. Mostly, they're sad-sack anthems about moving on, but every so often, the wound is raw enough that the artist is inspired to issue their former lover a cutting message: I'm better off without you.

That's what Katy Perry seems to be doing with her new single "Part of Me," which she premiered at the Grammy Awards on Sunday. With lyrics like "Days like this I want to drive away/ Pack bags and watch your shadow fade/ You chewed me up and spit me out like I was poison in your mouth/ You took my life, you drank me down/ But that was then and this is now," it's pretty clear she is dressing down her ex, Russell Brand, and has no intention of beating around the bush.

Need less-obtuse lyrical evidence that the song is about Brand? Later, she sings, "You can keep the diamond ring, it don't mean nothing anyway/ In fact, you can keep everything, except for me." Perry has only exchanged rings with one gent, and that's Brand.

But this isn't her first kiss-off track: On Teenage Dream, Perry laments a love gone wrong on "Circle the Drain," which she reportedly penned about her relationship with Travie McCoy. It doesn't present a flattering picture of her time with the Gym Class Heroes frontman. "You fall asleep during foreplay/ 'Cause the pills you take/ Are more your forte," Perry sings. "Wanna be your lover/ Not your f---ing mother/ Can't be your savior/ I don't have the power/ I'm not gonna stay and watch you circle the drain." Ouch.

Whether "Part of Me" or "Circle the Drain" will stand the test of time to rank alongside the most-famous kiss-off songs in pop history remains to be seen, but Perry has certainly got people talking right now. From Gloria Gaynor's disco classic "I Will Survive" to George Michael's "Faith" and pretty much half the songs in Kelly Clarkson's catalog, it's a genre that could use a little fresh blood, though these five (relatively) recent additions to the cannon do a pretty solid job of holding down the jilted-and-not-having-it fort.

Justin Timberlake, "Cry Me a River" and "What Goes Around ... Comes Around"
We're giving Justin Timberlake a little extra shine on our kiss-off list because he did the genre justice by bringing the sex to it then coming back for more — which is a pretty good metaphor for how we'd like to break up with him. "What Goes Around" was in many ways a sequel to Timberlake's 2002 single "Cry Me a River," from his debut solo set, Justified. "River" details the dissolution of a relationship after his girl cheated on him and is allegedly a behind-the-scenes look at what really ended his three-year relationship with Britney Spears.

"I'm not going to specifically say if any song is about anybody," Timberlake told MTV when asked who the ballad was about. "I will say writing a couple of songs on the record helped me deal with a couple of things."

Noted. Timberlake returned to the post-Britney well for "What Goes Around," from 2006's FutureSex/LoveSounds, though for his second spin, the spurned heartthrob changed the message from "How could you?" to "You're gonna get yours." The lesson here is clear: Do not cheat on JT unless you would like several awesome pop songs assassinating your character penned in your honor. (And, really, wouldn't you rather be the subject of "LoveStoned"?)

Adele, "Rolling in the Deep"
While assembling this list, we tried to keep it to songs where we could identify the subject (i.e. Britney in "Cry Me a River," Carey Hart in Pink's "So What," which you'll find below), but we're making an exception for Adele's "Rolling in the Deep." The song is so ubiquitous after its many Grammy wins and so famously about her ex that it is impossible to ignore. And while Adele has never spoken publicly about who the songs on her massive album 21 are about — and the guy has smartly never stepped forward to say, "Yeah, I'm the one who was pretty awful to the world's current favorite singer" — "Rolling in the Deep" is still without question the most-stinging kiss-off song in recent memory.

The powerhouse vocalist doesn't sugarcoat her feelings, singing, "Finally, I can see you crystal clear/ Go 'head and sell me out and I'll lay your s--t bare/ See how I leave with every piece of you/ Don't underestimate the things that I will do." Depending how you look at it, Adele possibly offered up the harshest kiss-off ever in the history of sound. If it wasn't bad enough to have an album's worth of songs dedicated to how much you sucked as a boyfriend, we wonder what it feels like to watch that album go on to win six Grammys and sell close to 7 million copies, seemingly en route to becoming the first 10-time platinum album in the U.S. since Usher's 2004 Confessions. They say looking good is the best revenge (and she did that too, looking glam and trim on Grammy night), but we think Adele's critical and commercial success probably stings the hardest.

Pink, "So What"
Our thoughts on success killing the game when it comes to slapping your ex in the figurative face also applies here: "So What," the lead single from Pink's fifth studio album, 2008's Funhouse, was the singer's first #1 hit. (Doesn't that seem strange? It's true though.) This song was written by Pink while she and Carey Hart were separated and the oft-brutally honest singer did not hold back when it came to taking shots at the motocross superstar.

The song's chorus says it all: "So, so what/ I'm still a rock star, I got my rock moves/ And I don't need you/ And guess what, I'm having more fun/ And now that we're done, I'm gonna show you tonight/ I'm alright, I'm just fine/ And you're a tool/ So, so what/ I am a rock star, I got my rock moves/ And I don't want you tonight."

Hart must be into that sort of thing, however, because he and Pink reunited not long after the song was recorded and he even good-naturedly cameos throughout the video. The pair now have a baby girl, Willow, and appear happier than ever. Maybe it took a good kiss-off for these two love birds to realize they couldn't live without each other.

Alanis Morissette, "You Oughta Know"
In case you don't know already know, this angst classic is all about Dave Coulier, a comedian-actor best known as Joey Gladstone on the former ABC sitcom "Full House." Yes, Alanis Morissette wonders if Uncle Joey is thinking about her when he's, you know, getting busy with his new girl. Eek. Once you know this song is about Coulier, it's difficult to watch "Full House" the same way. After all, we learn an awful lot about his relationship with the much-younger Morissette — including that we should probably give them a rundown on what you are and are not permitted to do in a movie theater.

Sure, there are more-recent breakup tracks and, yes, we were trying to keep this list contemporary, but much like the end of a relationship gone sour, it's hard to shake a great kiss-off song.

What's your favorite kiss-off song? Tell us in the comments below!

UNIVERSAL CITY, California — Hard rock, heavy metal, hardcore and punk have long gone hand-in-hand with evil wizards, magic, vampires and werewolves. And with a collective sub-cultural pedigree that includes stints in the Germs, No Use for a Name, Sunny Day Real Estate, Scream and some band called Nirvana, you'd think the Foo Fighters — set to perform at Sunday's Movie Awards — would know their "Potter" from their Zeppelin. Certainly they can recognize a "wand" reference and pinpoint its origin?

Right? Before we put MTV News' magically crafted trivia to the band, it seemed safe to assume the Foos would accurately distinguish between the words of Harry Potter, a "Twilight" character and Led Zeppelin. But was their underground nerd cred blown to shreds? Read on — and click the video! — to see how the Foo Fighters fared when we caught up with them on the Universal Studios lot, shortly after they finished rehearsing their Movie Awards performance. Our own Jim Cantiello played dungeon master as Dave Grohl, Nate Mendel, Taylor Hawkins, Chris Shiflett and Pat Smear were given a series of semi-famous lines and asked whether they originated with "Harry Potter," the "Twilight Saga" or the lyrics of hard-rock pioneers Led Zeppelin. Here's a sampling of a few of those one-liners: » "The elder wand, the most powerful wand ever made." » "Why don't you let me be yours ever truly? Can I make your garden grow?" » "You're lying, Dolores! You mustn't tell lies!" Can you guess whether the lines above came from the "Potter" flicks, "Twilight" or Robert Plant? Watch as the Foos try their best to do exactly that. Then tune in to the MTV Movie Awards on Sunday to catch the Foo Fighters rock the stage with their new single, "Walk." Will wizards, vampires or dream thieves steal the 2011 MTV Movie Awards? Find out June 5, when the 20th annual show airs live at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Whitney Houston dies at 48

Whitney Houston

It?s no secret she?s had a rough go of it in recent years, and Whitney Houston has died of undisclosed causes, says her publicist Kristen Foster. With her fans and friends understandably devastated by the news, details available thus far tell that the "I Will Always Love You" singer was found unresponsive in her room at the Beverly Hilton hotel on Saturday (February 11). With paramedica arriving within minutes, Houston was pronounced dead at 3:55PM with a full investigation already underway - though there are said to be no signs of foul play. According to TMZ, a search of the Beverly Hilton Hotel room in which the 48-year-old was staying found no illegal drugs, though prescription medications were located. TMZ adds that there's a chance Miss Houston died from drowning in the bathtub, but since her body was removed from the water before EMTs arrived the conclusive determination must await an autopsy. Below are pictures from the scene at the Beverly Hilton Hotel after Whitney Houston's passing (February 11). [gallery=817]

Miley Cyrus Makes Liam Hemsworth 'Really Happy'

'Hunger Games' actor opens up to Details about some of the controversy his girlfriend has generated.
By Jocelyn Vena

When Miley Cyrus met her "Last Song" co-star Liam Hemsworth back in 2009, it seemed that the chemistry between the pair didn't translate well to the moviegoing public. But the couple is still together in real life, and Details magazine cover boy and "Hunger Games" star Hemsworth opened up to the mag about their relationship.

"What happened happened, and we've been together two and a half years," the Aussie star said. "She makes me really happy. When you start, you want to be professional, but when you're filming those scenes with someone and pretending to love them, you're not human if you don't feel something."

From there, the twosome embarked on a well-publicized love affair, and as comfortable as he feels with his superstar lady love, he feels equally welcomed by her family. "[Billy Ray] is very spiritual. He's just one of the nicest guys. Very accommodating. I've listened to his music since we got together. It's awesome," he said, adding that he had some Nashville-related customs and foods he had to get used to while hanging with the Cyrus clan. "I'd never heard of country-fried steak before. It's great! I love fried food."

Former Disney queen Cyrus has always courted controversy. Back in November the saucy 19-year-old told a room of her friends, "You know you're a stoner when friends make you a Bob Marley cake — you know you smoke way too much f---in' weed," at her birthday party. It was a moment that made for some spicy headlines. And a moment that Hemsworth defends.

"She's in a room full of her best friends. And you have one person who comes in there and videos it," he said. "The poor girl can't have one night where she can feel safe in her own world. It's ridiculous."
