'Conan The Barbarian': The Reviews Are In!

While critics prefer the remake to Arnold Schwarzenegger's original, reviews aren't glowing.
By Terri Schwartz

"Conan the Barbarian" isn't trying to pull any punches. From the beginning, the remake of the 1982 cult classic proclaims that its lead lives, loves, slays and is content. And critics are saying that's exactly what you get in theaters.

Reviews haven't necessarily been positive, with critics complaining about the script and the one-dimensional characters. But they seem to agree that Jason Momoa did a better job in the title role than Arnold Schwarzenegger, and the movie is fun — at least as a mindless summer blockbuster. It might not be worth spending the extra money to see the flick in 3-D, but the fighting is good and gory if that's what fans are looking for.

But don't let us tell you what to think. Before you head to theaters to watch "Conan the Barbarian," find out what the critics thought of "Conan the Barbarian" in our review round-up:

The Script
"With a script so pat and humor-free, Momoa has little to do but sneer and slice. The film informs us that Conan has the heart of a lion and 'the loyalty of a bloodhound,' but we get nary a sniff of that in this carnage fest. He's built like a tank, but Conan emotes like one, too." — Scott Bowles, USA Today

The Effects
"This 'Conan' plods along, regularly erupting in action scenes that make scant visual sense in two dimensions and none at all in 3-D. The few that stick out involve supernatural beasties; there's one ferocious battle against warriors made of sand that combines athletic parkour and digital effects to surprisingly exciting ends. Other than that, it's tame stuff, and there's little sense of the larger mythical stage the hero strides across." — Ty Burr, The Boston Globe

The Remake
"The original 'Conan' was a sloppy, grandiose, unforgivable muckbath directed by the (I say the words lovingly) right-wing maniac John Milius. I watched it about four times to make sure it had no redeeming qualities. The reboot (re-sandal?) isn't good either, exactly. But it has a certain commitment to its cause, and by that I mean it supplies the necessary flayings, slayings, beheadings and, um, a be-nose-ing, all of it dancing to the tune of those amusingly stilted He-Man declaratives — King James Bible cadences applied to comic-book visions. It knows it's a B movie, and gets on with it." — Kyle Smith, The New York Post

The Schwarzenegger Connection
"In this dank ultimate-fighting challenge, Jason Momoa as Conan provides the only visual vivacity; he has an eye-catchingly sensuous face atop the requisite statuesque beefcake. Much more than Schwarzenegger in his early Teutonic-slab phase, Momoa nicely fulfills the law of Hollywood Darwinism: survival of the dishiest. Such is his sex appeal that he almost brings plausibility to the movie's silliest scene, when Conan tells Tamara, 'I live, I love, I slay, and I am content,' and the virgin instantly falls into his arms. Guys bringing their dates to this murky holocaust are advised not to try using Conan's credo as a pickup line." — Richard Corliss, Time

The Final Word
" 'Conan the Barbarian,' starring the excellent rippling chisel of Jason Momoa, is brutal, bloody beyond belief, and has no socially redeeming value. So it is with a certain amount of guilt that I say it's kind of a wicked blast to watch, especially if you're in the mood for some righteous revenge." — Betsy Sharkey, The Los Angeles Times

Britney Cozies Up To Beyonce: VMA Seating Revealed!

Presenter Kim Kardashian has a VMA seat, but where's hubby Kris Humphries?

It's that time of year again, everyone. The seating cards are being placed inside the Nokia Theatre in sunny Los Angeles as producers work to put the finishing touches on Sunday's 2011 Video Music Awards.

So what types of match-ups have they thought up this year? MTV News' Jim Cantiello investigated and found out some tasty tidbits.

"Tony Bennett: This guy is a baller, and whoever is behind him is going to have the craziest contact high," he teased of the 85-year-old crooner, who will pay tribute to the late Amy Winehouse at Sunday's show. So who snagged that seat? Wiz Khalifa, naturally.

Kim Kardashian will also be in the house as a presenter, but Jim wondered: "Where's her husband at? Her husband doesn't get a seat card. You thought when you marry Kim Kardashian you'd instantly get more famous. Dude, you're still not famous enough to get your own card at the VMAs," Jim warned the newlywed. His advice? "#DealWithIt."

"This is going to be a very rowdy section at the VMAs Sunday night," Jim said as he made his way through the theater. "This is the land of Odd Future. Now, there are like 100 members of Odd Future. I'm only seeing three cards. So sorry, Hodgy, you're not invited this year."

When Jim noticed there were some potato sacks lying around, he had a thought: "Here at the VMAs, we are prepared for anything in the audience, so if Lady Gaga wants to have a potato-sack race with Lil Wayne, we got them covered."

Of course, Justin Bieber and girlfriend Selena Gomez are seated next to each other. Jim, however, knows how to make it even more adorable. "The only thing that would make this cuter is if Maru the cat was trying to get in between them," he suggested.

Perhaps the section of the room fans will be most excited to see contains two of pop's ruling divas. "I'm in section Queen B at the VMAs," he said. So what does that mean? Beyoncé and Britney Spears are sitting next to each other!

Who else will be there? Well, the "Jersey Shore" kids will be sitting front row, right near the cast of "Teen Wolf." And the cast of MTV's newest hit show "Awkward." will be there as well.

The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. See the list of nominees, revisit last year's highlights and vote for Best New Artist by visiting VMA.MTV.com.

Katy Perry's 'Firework': A VMA Cheat Sheet

Leading nominee got serious in the clip about staying true to yourself.
By Gil Kaufman

We all know that Katy Perry's videos are a blast in a glass. But the most-nominated artist at the 2011 VMAs got serious for four minutes this year, and it helped cap a record-breaking run and made for one of the most visually arresting and inspirational clips of the year.

Perry is rolling into Sunday's show with nine nominations, including Video of the Year for "Firework," which is also nominated in the new Best Video With a Message category.

The California Gurl knew she wanted to make a very special clip for her favorite track from the smash Teenage Dream album, so she hooked up with veteran video director Dave Meyers (Pink, Kelly Clarkson, T.I.) on the project. And luckily for her, they were totally on the same page.

Meyers was looking to "play with [her] image a bit ... sort of demystify the candy-colored pop icon that she's become." He said he had to switch gears a bit, though, when the more toned-down "Teenage Dream" video came out. But with a bit of tweaking, he dug deep into the very personal song's message and came up with a new vision that Katy was totally onboard with. "We wanted to articulate the meaning of that song: what it means to be an underdog and have the courage, if you're on the outskirts of society, to be your own person," he said.

Packing off to Budapest, Meyers stationed Perry on the top of a building downtown and cast unknown, real teens in the clip -- which has been viewed more than 226 million times on YouTube -- to tell a variety of stories, from a boy in a physically abusive home to a girl who feels like a stranger in her own skin, a same-sex couple sharing a kiss and a teen suffering from cancer. All the while, Perry urges them to see the beauty inside, as her love, literally, explodes from her chest in a hail of sparks.

In the days leading up to the "Firework" premiere, Perry dedicated the video to the "It Gets Better" campaign, and she was thrilled that in the weeks following its release, the clip took on a life of its own, as a beacon of hope for everyone who's battled bullies or struggled to find themselves.

"I think that's why I wrote it, is because I really believe in people and I believe that people have a spark to be a firework," she told MTV News. "It's just up to them, and a lot of times it's only us that's standing in the way of reaching our goals, fulfilling our destinies, being the best version of who we possibly can be, so that's why I wrote it."

With fireworks bursting from her chest, Katy's call to power inspires the teens to burst with their own multicolored explosions of self-confidence and empowerment, providing a stunning, candy-colored finale in which more than 250 kids light up the sky thanks to their liberation from bad feelings.

The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday from Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. See the list of nominees, revisit last year's highlights and vote for Best New Artist by visiting VMA.MTV.com.
