Nicki Minaj is ready to get even more animated than she does in her videos and her colorful stage show. The singer confirmed that she's ready for her cartoon close-up in the latest "Ice Age" flick, "Ice Age: Continental Drift," in which she's set to play one of the many kooky characters alongside folks like Wanda Sykes, Jeremy Renner, Aziz Ansari, Heather Morris and even her pal and fellow MC Drake.

When MTV News caught up with Minaj backstage at the Femme Fatale Tour stop in New Jersey, she opened up about how she ended up in the A-list flick, the fourth in the hit franchise.

"I don't know how much I can talk about that, but I came about that when my agency sent me out on an audition for some people who wanted to hear me," she recalled. "They knew I liked animation, they knew I liked to do voices, and so they said they were doing that so I thought, 'This is amazing.' "

However, getting a part in the film wasn't all that easy for the superstar. "The original role that I was up for I didn't get," she explained. "So I said, 'Oh, OK, whatever.' I was really mad, and the next thing you know, they called me and they said, 'We wrote in a part just for you 'cause we really want you to be a part of this movie.' "

Although she wouldn't divulge which role she plays in the film, Minaj did say that she really put a lot of work into the part, leaving the final voice selection up to the film's producers. "And I just was screaming and so excited, and I went in and I had a blast. I did it as two different voices," she said. "We'll see what happens."

Nicki Minaj Says Sophomore Album Will Feature Roman

'But I never give away all my secrets,' Minaj's alter ego tells MTV News.

Nicki Minaj plans to head back to the studio this fall to begin work on her sophomore LP, the follow-up to 2010's Pink Friday. The over-the-top rapper is keeping most of the album details close to the vest, but does say that one of her personas will play a big part on the LP.

"I don't know, I don't think I'm hitting up anybody for features for this sophomore album," she told us backstage at the Femme Fatale Tour. She added that the vibe will be decided by the one and only "Roman ... possibly. But I never give away all my secrets."

Earlier this year, Nicki teased an album announcement for September, and when she sat down on "Good Morning America" last week, she said she was going big on her next album. "My best work is ahead of me, not behind me. Stay tuned," she explained. "As soon as I get off this tour [which wraps this month], I'm headed to L.A. to work on this sophomore album and it's gonna be epic."

In a chat with MTV News back in March, Minaj was equally coy about any details for the highly anticipated release, but seemed to know a lot more about her plans for it than she wanted to let on. "I can give you an idea," she said. "But I don't want to. I'd rather not right now. Because then everybody is gonna jump on the bandwagon and say they're putting out their album the same day."

And as if all that wasn't enough, Minaj will co-star in the forthcoming animated flick "Ice Age: Continental Drift," due out next summer.

'Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes' Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know

Simian franchise is back — and seemingly better than ever.
By Eric Ditzian

Forty-three-year-old spoiler alert! At the end of 1968's "Planet of the Apes," Charlton Heston stumbles into one of the great twists in movie history, discovering that the land full of talking simians and enslaved humans is not some alien world but, as the half-buried Statue of Liberty reveals, our own Earth.

Ever since, the franchise has been engrained in our pop-culture DNA, introducing a series of damn-dirty-apes and God-damn-you-all-to hell catchphrases and spawning a series of increasingly silly sequels, the last of which was Tim Burton's forgettable-if-not-so-infuriatingly-vapid "Planet of the Apes." Time (and Hollywood), in other words, has been about as kind to the franchise as nuclear weapons were to Heston's apocalyptic surroundings.

All that, however, is about to change. Director Rupert Wyatt has delivered, in "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," a prequel that not only is a worthy successor to the original film, but stands on its own as a kick-ass summer flick. How'd he pull off such a feat? That's an answer to be found in our cheat sheet: everything you need to know about "Rise of the Planet of the Apes."

In the Beginning
In spring 2010, it was simply called "Rise of the Apes," Fox's attempt to resurrect the franchise after Burton delivered a hefty box-office gross but failed to excite the masses about those dirty apes. James Franco reportedly beat out a line of young Hollywood talent for the role of the scientist who, on a quest to cure Alzheimer's, accidently creates a super-smart chimp that ... oh, just refer back to the film's title and you'll get the idea.

Freida Pinto soon signed on to play his love interest (and a brillz scientist in her own right), John Lithgow joined up to play Franco's Alzheimer's-afflicted father and Tom Felton became a cruel guard of an ape prison. But the true casting coup came when Andy Serkis, who played a motion-capture Gollum in the "Lord of the Rings" series, took on the role of the ape Caesar, the CGI leader of his kind's revolution.

All this promised to make this "Apes" far different than any before it, a point Franco emphasized when we caught up with him last October. "Where the other films provide commentary about class relations, race relations, interspecies relations, different cultures clashing, this movie is more of a Frankenstein story," he said.

A New World
Production kicked off in summer 2010, but we wouldn't get our first official peek at the movie until the following February, when a rather uninspiring photo of Franco in character popped up online. April brought not only a tweaked title (it was now, rather longwindedly, called "Rise of the Planet of the Apes"), but the first footage. Damn, those apes looked good! Credit goes to the techies at Weta Digital, who created the motion-captured aliens in "Avatar" and the creatures running wild in the new "Ape" footage.

"I watched it a hundred times," Felton told us about the trailer. "The special effects are ridiculous. The first question when I showed it to my friends was, 'Wow, how did they get the monkeys so well-trained?' I'm like, 'None of them were real!' It's quite weird to see so much CG effects in the real world, not some computer-generated world like 'Avatar.' "

Apes, Risen
The summer months brought a slew of new trailers, clips and photos — almost too many. Leave us a little mystery, OK? But then again, when you have a movie whose title essentially gives away the ending, there's not a lot to be spoiled, right?

Franco feared his high public profile would affect the reception of the film. Wyatt, though, wasn't worried. "I think people are going to see this film, hopefully, for the film," he told MTV News. "Those that will go see this film for James Franco will still see the film for James Franco. I totally understand where he's coming from. Obviously he took a bit of a knock with the Oscars, but at the end of the day, he's an actor and that's his job."

And Franco is part of one of our favorite popcorn flicks of the summer. So where does the franchise go from here? That depends a lot on how action at the box office shakes out. But the film is certainly set up for a sequel, and Wyatt knows exactly where he wants to take the story.

"This is a very, very self-contained film in the same way that you can say 'Spartacus' is," he explained. "I mean, it's the story of a revolutionary microcosm. And yes, there will potentially be a greater conflict, a more global conflict, a more continental conflict, in terms of what comes after this. And that would be wonderful."

Chuckie Will Debut Michael Jackson Remix In Miami

Official 'Hollywood Tonight' remix coming to Miami Music Week.

Leaving the South by Southwest festival, Lavo New York and Las Vegas' Marquee in his wake, house DJ Chuckie has his sights set on the week ahead. With Miami Music Week now upon us, Chuckie plans to seize the opportunity to debut new material. Fans will be tickled to know the Dutch producer has tracks in the can with Kelly Rowland and T-Pain, but when MTV News caught up with him Friday in New York, Chuckie shared the achievement of which he's most proud.

"I did a Michael Jackson remix, which was really scary — to touch Michael Jackson vocals," Chuckie said. "I did this remix for this track 'Hollywood Tonight.' I couldn't say it for a minute: The label called me, and they said, 'You can't say nothing about this. It's kind of a secret project.' It's gonna come out anytime now."

"Hollywood Tonight" was originally produced by Teddy Riley for Jackson's posthumous Michael album, and Chuckie's mix of the song will be the sole official remix of the track.

"I will play it Miami," Chuckie revealed. "I told them this is the best week to launch the remix. So it feels really good. I'm the only one remixing that Michael Jackson track, and they are considering it a single. For me, especially, it's an honor to remix the King of Pop because he died on my birthday."

So, will the mix be a thundering Chuckie Dutch house banger or will it have a melodic progressive house feel, like his Marquee remix of Diddy-Dirty Money's "I Hate That You Love Me"? Well, according to the "Let the Bass Kick" producer, fans will be getting a healthy dose of both.

"I had to bring in the raucous," Chuckie confessed. "Yeah, I did the Chuckie flavor, but then again, I wanted to make it really musical, so I went progressive (house) on it."

Chuckie will be performing twice at Miami Music Week: at the Cr2 Records Party at Wall Lounge on Wednesday, and then headlining "No Sugar Added" at Nikki Beach on Friday.

Are you excited to hear Chuckie's remix of Michael Jackson's "Hollywood Tonight"? Let us know in the comments below!
