R. Kelly Recovering from Emergency Throat Surgery

Singer R. Kelly is currently recovering in a Chicago hospital, after undergoing emergency throat surgery. According to the "I Believe I Can Fly" singer's rep, doctors had to drain an abscess on one of Kelly's tonsils, leaving him "laid up indefinitely."

"Kelly had visited a throat specialist earlier in the day complaining of severe throat pain," his rep said in a press release. "Following a preliminary exam, he was rushed to Northwestern Memorial for the procedure. It is not known when the multi-platinum recording star, who just completed the U.S. leg of his worldwide 'Love Letter' Tour, will be able to resume performing."

Kelly, 44, finished his North American tour on July 14 at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena. This upcoming weekend, he's scheduled to perform at Reggae Sumfest along with Nicki Minaj and Mya, but it seems unlikely that he will make it.

On Wednesday, the singer twittered his gratitude for the outpouring of love he's received. "I'd like to thank everybody for their love, concern and support," he wrote. "I WILL BE BACK!"

'Amazing Spider-Man' Trailer: What We Know So Far

From Peter Parker's 'daddy issues' to his new leading lady, Spidey clip hints at what's to come in 2012.

This weekend's "Captain America: The First Avenger" continues the charge of superhero supremacy at the box office this summer, and the grand tradition of Marvel heroes is sure to continue a year from now when "The Amazing Spider-Man" swings into action.

The first "Spider-Man" trailer hit the Web earlier this week (through both official and leaked channels), gifting comic book fans with the great power and great responsibility of delivering their snap judgments on Sony's developing reboot — well ahead of its summer 2012 release. Of course, we're not immune to having our own reactions here at MTV News. To that end, we took a closer look at the new Spidey trailer and found quite a bit to pick apart.

Even The Best Web-heads Have Daddy Issues
Most "Spider-Man" fans are familiar with Peter's relationship with Uncle Ben and Aunt May Parker, but the newest film's first trailer puts a heavy emphasis on our hero's birth parents. Although this territory has been covered before in the comics, it's a story far less frequently told than Peter's struggles with Uncle Ben's death. But director Marc Webb has said before that "Amazing Spider-Man" will deal heavily with Peter's daddy issues , and judging by the trailer, he wasn't kidding.

The Dark Spider
If there's one thing to take away from the "Spider-Man" trailer, it's that this isn't Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire's web-slinger. In the hands of Webb and leading man Andrew Garfield, we're seeing a Spider-Man story that takes itself much more seriously than the whimsical nature of the Raimi and Maguire era. Whether you approve of the tonal change will vary based on personal taste, but there's certainly no arguing that this "Spider-Man" movie feels different than the last three, if nothing else.

When Andrew Met Emma
Another big change from the "Spider-Man" films of yesteryear is the removal of longtime love interest Mary-Jane Watson in favor of Gwen Stacy, played here by Emma Stone. Much of the trailer's focus is on the budding relationship between Andrew and Emma's characters, and already it feels as though they share more common ground with each other than Peter and MJ enjoyed in the first film's opening chapters.

Back To Start
One thing that isn't different from the previous Spider-flicks is that "Amazing" appears to be an origin story, just like the first Raimi-directed picture. It's a curious choice: The original "Spider-Man" movie swung into theaters in 2002, and only 10 years later we're seeing yet another re-telling of how Peter Parker got his radioactive spider-powers. There's already debate about whether another origin story was worth the narrative cost, but we'll reserve some judgment until we see the finished product — or, at least, another trailer.

First-Person Heroics
Speaking of other trailers, here's hoping that the second "Spider-Man" spot puts a heavier emphasis on action than this first one. We don't see Garfield in action albeit for a few shots two-thirds-of-the-way into the trailer, and even then, he's without mask or costume. The final portion of the trailer, clocking in at almost a minute, focuses entirely on Spidey swinging from rooftop to rooftop ... but all from the character's own perspective. Again, it's a curious choice to show the web-slinging action from Spidey's point of view rather than allowing the viewer to gaze upon the hero in all of his glory. It's bound to be a breathtaking sequence when the full movie hits theaters; as the capper for a first trailer, however, the "Spidey-cam" will likely turn some fans off.

What do you think of the first "Amazing Spider-Man" trailer? Tell us in the comments!

Justin Bieber, Bruno Mars, Muse Added To Grammy Show

Usher, Jaden Smith, B.o.B, Janelle Monae and Lady Antebellum will also perform on February 13.

While Willow Smith is the one who made music headlines with "Whip My Hair" last year, it's her brother, "Karate Kid" actor Jaden Smith, who will take the stage at the upcoming 53rd Grammy Awards in a special performance alongside Usher and Justin Bieber, with whom he collaborated on the song "Never Say Never" last summer.

The trio joins a list of new performers added to the show on Thursday (January 20) that will also include another power trifecta made up of B.o.B, Bruno Mars and Janelle Monáe, according to a press release from the Recording Academy announcing the additions to the February 13 telecast from the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Also taking the stage next month will be nominees Muse and Lady Antebellum. They will join a roster of previously announced performers that includes Eminem, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Arcade Fire, Cee Lo Green and Miranda Lambert. It will be the first time on the Grammy performance stage for Bieber, B.o.B, Lambert, Mars, Monáe, Muse and Smith. Eminem, Green, Gaga, Perry, Usher and Lady Antebellum will be making return visits for the occasion.

While 11-time Grammy winner Eminem leads the pack in nominations this year (with 10 nods), Mars has seven nominations, and Gaga and Lady Antebellum are not far behind with six nods each. B.o.B has notched five, Perry and Green are each up for four, and Arcade Fire and Lambert are vying for three awards. Bieber, Muse, Usher and Monáe are each nominated for two Grammys.

No details of the collaborative performances were released, but the Grammy announcement promised a rare, never-before-seen event for the Mars, B.o.B and Monáe segment.

With the addition of Antebellum, all five Album of the Year nominees (Eminem, Arcade Fire, Gaga, Perry) are now scheduled to perform on the show. Additional performers, presenters and special segments will be announced soon.

Which Grammy performance are you most looking forward to? Talk about it in the comments!

First Look At "The Amazing Spider-Man"

It feels like "The Amazing Spider-Man," the reboot of the classic comic tale starring Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, was cast like five minutes ago. But already, we have the first trailer for the flick, which deals with Spider-Man as a boy and teenager. According to this mythology, he's bitten by the radioactive spider while visiting his crush, Gwen Stacey, at the science lab where she works. A few notes: (A) Emma looks amazeballs with blonde hair and bangs. (B) Wait, that isn't a science lab—that's Hearst Tower in New York City. And (C) did they take a page from "Friday Night Lights" and get Explosions in the Sky to do music for the trailer? I can't quite tell. [Huffington Post]

Katy Perry And The VMAs: A History

The most-nominated artist of the 2011 show hasn't taken home a Moonman yet, but she did take home a husband!
By Jocelyn Vena

The 2011 VMAs will honor a number of the year's best artists, but one very kooky, colorful California Gurl is looking to outshine them all: Katy Perry tops the nominees with a whopping nine nods for "E.T.," "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)," "Teenage Dream" and "Firework." Perry has yet to win a Moonman, but the show has played an important role in her career and personal life in other interesting ways.

"It's always exciting to be a part of the VMAs because there's so much spontanaeity," "I just remember growing up seeing craziness ensued with the VMAs. I wasn't allowed to see it, but I done watched it!"

Back in 2008, Kinga Burza, the director of "I Kissed a Girl," warned MTV News that Perry would soon be a force to be reckoned with. "She's fresh, original, intelligent and talented, with a star-like charisma, which will have boys and girls all around the world cooing for more!" Burza said.

And she was right. Perry made her VMA debut that year, singing along with the night's house band, Travis Barker and the late DJ AM. That night, "I Kissed a Girl" was up for Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Female Video and Best New Artist.

She went home empty-handed, but the show was the first time (and certainly not the last time) that she and host Russell Brand would cross paths.

By the time 2009 rolled around, the VMAs were back in New York City, and Perry had become a household name. She was nominated for Best Female Video for "Hot n Cold" and opened the show with a rocking performance of Queen's "We Will Rock You" alongside Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry.

Although she didn't take any prizes home, she did manage to nab Brand, who hosted the show for a second year. Perry said she saw a different side of the comedian during and after the show. "I really appreciate his sense of humor," she explained. "It's real dark, it's real wrong and it's really funny."

In 2010, Perry hit the VMAs' white-hot carpet in Los Angeles and was by then one of the biggest pop stars in the world. Her relationship with Brand had escalated to an engagement, and her sweet and sassy "California Gurls" video, featuring Snoop Dogg, was nominated for Best Female Video and Best Pop Video.

"I like the idea of this being like a board game," she said of the video in 2009. "It's kind of like Candy Land. That was probably one of my favorite games to play growing up. I like to bring back those pure childhood moments and give them a little bit of a naughty twist, of course!"

Perry is coming up on her fourth VMA appearance in 2011 and this could finally be her year. She's back in her home state of California, she's tied the knot with Brand, and she's broken all sorts of records with the songs off her Teenage Dream album.

Considering she's up for hardware in categories like best Female Video ("Firework"), Video of the Year ("Firework") and Best Collaboration ("E.T.") featuring Kanye West, to name a few, her chances of bringing home a Moonman or two are looking good.

The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live on Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT. See the list of nominees, revisit last year's highlights and vote for your favorites in the general categories by visiting VMA.MTV.com.

Now that school's out and folks are slathering on the sunscreen, we figured it was time to take the temperature of the annual Summer Jam Sweepstakes — the race to dominate the airwaves (and your tanning playlist) during the long, hot months of the year.

So last week, we published our initial rankings in the race for the Summer Jam crown, a list that was topped by Katy Perry's "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)," with Pitbull's "Give Me Everything" and LMFAO's "Party Rock Anthem" following close behind. A whole host of other big-name stars — like Eminem, Nicki Minaj, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga and Adele, to name just a few — also made the cut, along with some dark-horse candidates (like Foster the People, Maroon 5 and David Guetta) who are determined to make this competition close.

Of course, our rankings had you talking too — in fact, the conversation in our comments section got so huge (we even heard from a Hall of Fame third baseman!) that we've decided to spotlight some of the best back-and-forth right now. What's your pick for the Song of Summer 2011? Here's what you had to say:

"This has been Katy's decade so far! She made pop music fun again." — Tuffy Luvvy

" 'Lighters' by Eminem, Royce and Bruno Mars all the way, baby! It's a long-shot, I know. I think Katy Perry will get it, but you never know." — lilbittaflava

"I like Katy, but 'I Wanna Go' from Britney sounds more like a summer song." — Aaron

"Britney Spears! 'I Wanna Go' just makes my summer great!" — Melissa Goulart

"Britney Spears all the way! 'I Wanna Go' all the way! I'm still in love with Pitbull's 'Give Me Everything,' and his album is amazing. Nicki Minaj's 'Super Bass' is sick, love it!" — RyanJaggerz

" 'The Edge of Glory' is a glorious pop anthem-masterpiece, no need for it to be crowned as a 'jam.' Adele's 'Rolling' is heart-touching, breathtaking and also a masterpiece." — Spyros Venturis

" 'Moves Like Jagger' by Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera is amazing!" — SuperZonic Jbsz

"Oh I couldn't believe when I saw them, thank you so much MTV for putting them on the list ... I love them, talking about of course FOSTER THE PEOPLE YEAHHHHHHH." — hotalejandro

" 'Tonight Tonight' by Hot Chelle Rae! I could party to that every day of the summer." — WhatShouldIDo?

"You guys forgot about New Boyz ft. Chris Brown, 'Better With the Lights Off,' and Lupe Fiasco ft. Trey Songz, 'Outta My Head.' " — booklady

"All these songs have that 'I've heard it all before' sound to them. Nothing special about any of the songs on the list. A lot of the 'artists' on this list would be better off working a mop at a Waffle House. It's Kanye's fault." — Mike Schmidt
