Neon Trees 'Confident' They'll Overcome Patrick Stump In Musical March Madness

On Monday, when we unveiled our 2011 Musical March Madness bracket, there were more than a few shock seedings ... though perhaps none were as eye-opening as the #5 seed given to Neon Trees, the Provo, Utah, quartet who went from unknowns to rock-radio staples thanks to a relentless touring schedule and the success of their song "Animal."

The selection committee was obviously impressed with their overall body of work (tough, out-of-conference schedule, high RPI, etc.), but with first-round voting set to close on Sunday, the Trees find themselves locked in a tight battle with 12th-seeded Patrick Stump, perhaps proving that they're not yet ready for the MMM stage.

'The Lincoln Lawyer': The Reviews Are In!

Should viewers flock to Matthew McConaughey's legal drama? The critics weigh in.
By Eric Ditzian

Matthew McConaughey's "The Lincoln Lawyer" joins a crowded field of box-office newbies this weekend — including the thriller "Limitless" and the sci-fi comedy "Paul" — but the top B.O. spots are nonetheless likely to go holdovers: "Battle: Los Angeles" and "Rango."

While McConaughey's return to legal drama, following 1996's "A Time to Kill," has received overwhelmingly positive reviews, the actor simply doesn't have the box-office clout he once had, especially outside the rom-com wheelhouse in which he's been swinging for the last five years. Yet in revisiting legal territory, McConaughey seems to have found a winner. Critics have cheered the film's expert handling of genre material and its star's winning onscreen presence, even as they've often dinged the story for stumbling at its conclusion. Read on for more "Lincoln Lawyer" insight from the pros.

The Story
"The story, and there's a lot of it, nicely condensed from [Michael] Connelly's page-turner best-seller, largely turns on a case that looks like a slam dunk or, as one of Mick's [McConaughey's] bail bondsmen, Val (John Leguizamo), insists, a jackpot. A man (Ryan Phillippe) did or did not beat up a woman, and his Beverly Hills grizzly mama (Frances Fisher) has the right get-out-of-jail card: a fat bank account. The client, Louis Roulet, insists on his innocence, and Mick takes the bait and the money (the same thing). Complications ensue. Mick works the case and chases leads, helped by an investigator (William H. Macy) and dogged by cops with grudges (Bryan Cranston and Michael Paré). Everything looks pretty clear-cut until it doesn't." — Manohla Dargis, The New York Times

The Performance
"McConaughey nails it as attorney Mickey Haller. He's a little more clothed than usual, a little more landlocked, but he's once again the sort of gleaming and disreputable bum that he plays best. ... There's a languid and cocksure ease to McConaughey's performance that harks back to his first go as a lawyer, in the John Grisham thriller 'A Time to Kill.' — Amy Biancolli, Houston Chronicle

The Direction
"Director Brad Furman gives 'The Lincoln Lawyer' a down-market, retro patina, reminiscent of such washed-out classics as 'Harper' and '52 Pick-Up' and, more recently, 'Out of Sight' and 'Jackie Brown.' Granted, he exhibits a weakness for hand-held shaky-cams to convey a jangly sense of spontaneity, but for the most part he wisely lays off style for its own sake, staying out of the way to let Connelly's quirky, vividly drawn characters carry the story." — Ann Hornaday, The Washington Post

The Dissenters
" 'The Lincoln Lawyer' gets off to a promisingly ambiguous start, but it takes a turn for the shrill and melodramatic with the arrival of Michael Paré as a cop unafraid to shout his disapproval of McConaughey's questionable ethics. From that point on, the film devolves into the cozily predictable world of TV legal dramas, abandoning the moral uncertainty of its opening scenes for the benefit of a villain so comically over-the-top in his evil, he might as well be theatrically twirling a mustache and tying a damsel in distress to train tracks." — Nathan Rabin, The Onion's A.V. Club

The Final Word
"[N]o great surprise here that 'The Lincoln Lawyer' turns out to be superior piece of crime storytelling with some characters clearly designed for recurring roles (in other novels and perhaps other films should this one do well) while others are designated for showy guest appearances as larger-than-life evildoers or tough-guy eccentrics. The film is only 'superior' though, not great. The themes feel shopworn and devotees of crime fiction can point to the any number of antecedents for these characters." — Kirk Honeycutt, The Hollywood Reporter

Robert Pattinson Dishes On Awkward Love Scenes

'Reese [Witherspoon] had this wig on, and literally, I was wiping my nose on her wig,' RPattz says of scene in 'Water for Elephants.'

We've heard Robert Pattinson talk about his love scenes before. "Lot of my crack in it!" he once laughed to us about what we can expect in the upcoming drama "Bel Ami." And we've even seen photographic evidence of his honeymoon boom-boom with Kristen Stewart in November's first installment of "Breaking Dawn."

But when it comes to Pattinson's amorous encounters onscreen, his fans can never get enough. It's no surprise then that one Twitter user submitted a question during "MTV First: Robert Pattinson" asking if the actor felt awkward doing love scenes with "Water for Elephants" co-star Reese Witherspoon.

Awkward, no. Sick? Well, yes.

"The love scene in this, I was doing it when I had a really bad cold," Pattinson explained. "I'm not generally that awkward doing stuff apart from when I've got my belly coming out. But my nose is running all over the place and it was in one of the additional photography scenes, and Reese had this wig on, and literally, I was wiping my nose on her wig."

"We were doing this really passionate love scene," he added with a giggle. "It was really stupid. I guess I'm not that awkward anymore."

The key with any love scene, Pattinson went on to make clear, is that it has to make sense within the context of the story. You can't just get freaky in front of the camera because someone thinks it'll boost ticket sales.

"It always depends. You've got to really know what you're doing. If it's just a sort of arbitrary love scene, it'd be quite difficult," he said.

And what of his scene with Stewart in "Breaking Dawn," the one we got an early, feather-filled glimpse of in January? Rob hesitated before saying simply, "The one on 'Breaking Dawn' is pretty funny."

How Did Rachel Uchitel?s Decision To Be On ?Celebrity Rehab? Affect Her Chances For ?Celebrity Apprentice??

Well, easy come, easy go. I told you that Donald Trump had extended an offer to the first alleged Tiger Woods' mistress, Rachel Uchitel, to be on the upcoming season of 'Celebrity Apprentice.'Then it was announced today that Rachel is one of the people who will be on 'Celebrity Rehab' (for $500,000, according to TMZ). How did that sit with the Donald? TMZ asked.
Trump's reaction: "It's a terrible decision. We have zero interest in her now."Trump thinks Rachel will regret her decision. "Look at what 'Celebrity Apprentice' did for Piers Morgan. He's getting Larry King's job. She made a bad mistake."Trump's final shot: "Celebrity Apprentice is a huge show and 'Celebrity Rehab' is not. I have 10 people who want to be on the show for every slot that's available. I'm moving on."
Hmmm. Well, it sounds like Rachel went where the guaranteed money was (although Donald had made her an offer, NBC has final say on who competes on the show). Do you think she made the right choice?Photos by INFContinue reading
