Russell Brand was not what exactly you'd call husband material before Katy Perry entered his life. Yet the comedian known for his wild bachelor lifestyle made a quick turnaround, proposing to Perry less than four months after they began dating. Brand says he didn't put up a fight when the pop star wanted monogamy -- because he had reached a point in his life where he was ready to be tamed.
"If you're wild, like a wild animal, marriage won't contain you," Brand says in the new issue of
Redbook magazine. "I think that's how a lot of people get into trouble. It's sort of like someone who isn't toilet-trained -- this is the kind of thing that will compromise most marriages."
Umm, yeah, we'd imagine that not being toilet-trained would kill a relationship pretty quickly. But we get what he's saying. Although Brand has shared plenty of salacious stories about his single days (
"nine women in one night" and so forth), he tells the magazine that his wild reputation is exaggerated.
"The bad-boy label is just an assumption," Brand declares. "I really never was that. I was a vegetarian, animal-loving child of a single mother, who I have been devoted to my whole life. I recognize that I have the ability to be selfish, but I also recognize that you can't be happy if you only care about yourself at the expense of other people."
Right now, says Brand, his relationship with Perry is the most important thing in his life -- and he would never trade love for money, as his character in the film
Arthur considers doing.
"I feel quite lucky -- now that I'm married, I have this great love and partnership in my life that is the most important thing to me," gushes Brand. "I also happen to be married to a girl who is quite a lot of fun. And I'm discovering how lovely permanence and building an ongoing relationship can be, rather than always thinking,
What's next?"
The remake of the 1981
Dudley Moore film
Arthur (costarring
Helen Mirren) is expected to be one of the year's hot movies, but before that, Brand is starring as an even wackier character: the Easter bunny, in the CG/live-action kids' movie
Hop, which hits theaters April 1.
"I'm getting to the age where my friends have children, and I thought it would be nice to do a film they could watch," explains Brand. "I also quite like to be recognized by children; I find it sweet."
Hmm, sounds to us like somebody may be contemplating fatherhood!
