Robert Plant And Alison Krauss Win Grammy Album Of The Year

Raising Sand, from Led Zeppelin vet and bluegrass superstar, wins five Grammys on Sunday night.

"I'm bewildered," Robert Plant said onstage as he accepted the Grammy Album of the Year award with Alison Krauss on Sunday night. "In the old days we would have called this selling out, but it's a good way to spend a Sunday."

He was probably one of the few who were surprised, because Raising Sand, which won five trophies at Sunday night's show, is in many ways the perfect Grammy album. It features two respected veterans, a critically lauded producer, some sandpaper-and-velvet vocals and a baker's dozen of time-tested standards.

You're probably familiar with Robert Plant from his Led Zeppelin days, and you might be aware of producer T-Bone Burnett's work on the "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" soundtrack (it won the Grammy for Album of the Year in 2002). And if you don't know who Alison Krauss is, she possesses a haunting set of pipes and is one of the meanest fiddle players in the world. Oh, and she's won 21 Grammys, more than any other female artist and the seventh-most in history.

Really, she's the key to Sand's success, and not just because of her voice (or her fiddle playing). She and Plant first met in 2004, at a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame tribute to legendary bluesman Leadbelly, and the former Zeppelin man was amazed by her knowledge of American Roots music — so much so that they began kicking around the idea of recording an album together. Three years later, Sand was released.

And while Plant possesses the more famous voice, the album's finest moments radiate from Krauss. Whether she's getting bluesy on Little Milton's "Let Your Loss Be Your Lesson" or entwining with Plant's husky voice on songs like "Please Read the Letter" and Roly Salley's winsome "Killing the Blues," she more than carries her end of the bargain.

And perhaps that's also due to producer Burnett, who handpicked the 13 songs the duo cover on Sand. His arrangements are sparse — giving the two voices ample room to breathe — yet dense, warm and crackling at the same time. It's a testament to his work that he's often given just as much billing as Plant and Krauss on the project ... and it's certainly justified.

To date, Sand has sold more than 1 million copies, heaped tons of acclaim and actually earned a Grammy last year — "Gone Gone Gone (Done Moved On)" took home the award for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals.

One expert was surprised not by the album's success, but by the fact that it's actually quite a good album.

"At first, the album seemed like a vanity project. ... Two names, clearly a one-off record, didn't have to be any good, you know?" New York Times music critic Jon Caramanica said. "Led Zeppelin fans would buy it because of Robert Plant, Alison Krauss would get a check. But it actually turned out to be a really thoughtful, really good record. So when you combine all that with the fact that the Grammys love to lionize one of their own, I could really see it taking home some awards."

Jessica Simpson Wants You To Be Pretty (Not Necessarily In Pink) For The Prom

Jessica Simpson prom dresses

Jessica Simpson never went to the prom. But she wants you, or at least your younger cousin, to look gorgeous at yours. So in addition to her line of shoes, bags, jeans, etc—apparently, her apparel fiefdom is valued at almost $1 billion a year—Jessica is now creating prom dresses for David's Bridal. As the press release reads, "Inspired by the fabulous designer gowns I've worn to red carpet events, my affordable collection is designed to fit and flatter a variety of body types and help girls achieve their own red carpet style for prom." The dresses cost between $139 and $229, and honestly, look pretty nice. I am thoroughly obsessed with the space age tie dye of the one on the left and am considering purchasing it. Even though I'd be wearing it to my 15-year reunion rather than to an actual prom. [People]

Ashley Tisdale On The Set Of ?High Stakes?

Here's 'High School Musical' star Ashley Tisdale on the set of her new movie, 'High Stakes.' Here's a description of it:
Sharpay and her pet dog, Boi, travel to New York City for a role in a Broadway hit, only to discover the part wasn't what she expected.
From the wardrobe, I'm guessing this is a campy-type of comedy that's meant to appeal to the Disney crowd (and I don't mean that in a snarky way). I'm tempted to see it just for the dog: what a cutie :)Photos by INF Continue reading

BABY MAMA FOOLERY! Rapper J-Kwon Jailed For Child Support & Child Wasn't His!

Last year, rapper J-Kwon known for his 2004 smash hit "Tipsy," had the media in a frenzy when he went missing and no one could find him. The St. Louis rapper later resurfaced and he is now speaking out about his disappearance last March. Apparently, he was locked up for failure to pay child support. Read on to find out what really happened...

J-Kwon, real name Jerrell Jones, called St Louis radio station 89.9 FM "The People's Station" to confirm that he had been making child support payments of $2,500 a month for seven years for a child he found out wasn't his.

“I blame my absence from the game on this situation. Just as I was getting my first million dollar check a girl came to me and said she was pregnant…I bought her a house cause she's from the hood too, I let her stay at the house. I guess while I'm on tour she's taking paper work from the courts and disposing of them…The payment ended up being $2,500 a month…This kid looked like someone else, the test results came back in 24 hours and I am not the father…I don't feel any better or any worse about the situation, I'm just happy to have my life back.”

SMDH! He also said that he plans on starting a foundation that will help other men in similar predicaments so they won't get tricked and also end up in jail .

"I'm gonna start a foundation just for that, that's crazy that the law helps someone scheme you for this long. A) You're young. B) Your successful and C) They don't want you with it no way."

Damn homie.  People really need to learn their rights. Isn't there a law or requirement to establish paternity before child support payments start. Either way. Shame on that chick for scheming like that.

Arcade Fire Throw An Anti-Grammy Party At Secret Show

The Grammy-nominated indie rockers announced details of the Los Angeles theater show just 12 hours before taking the stage.

LOS ANGELES — It wasn't the Grammys, and it wasn't supposed to be.

On Friday night, far away from the machinations of the music industry and the glad-handling of golden gramophones, in a grand old theater that now doubles as the Ukrainian Culture Center of Greater Los Angeles, Arcade Fire — the indie band who, at Sunday's 53rd Grammy Awards, will face off against the likes of Eminem and Lady Gaga for Album of the Year — threw what will probably go down as the week's greatest un-official, anti-Grammy pre-party: a sweaty, exuberant, all-ages secret show that felt about a million miles removed from the award-show hysteria that has descended on much of the city.

Only 500 tickets were sold, in a first-come, first-serve basis at three locations (a pair of record stores and the venerable El Rey Theatre) on Friday afternoon. There was no red carpet outside or a VIP area inside, just the still-elaborate eaves of an 86-year-old building now crumbling away on a decidedly gritty stretch of Melrose Avenue. The band gave away "free drinks and cotton candy" before the show even began.

It was, in short, an anti-industry affair in all conceivable ways, and Arcade Fire savored every second of it.

As the strains of Julie Andrews' "Lusty Month of May" crackled over the speakers, the Canadian band's members took to the tiny stage, grinned and then, appropriately enough, blasted headlong into "Month of May," from their Grammy-nominated The Suburbs, with frontman Win Butler cocking his head and jutting his guitar out into the crowd — who, being so close, gladly reached out and grabbed it. Given that they were playing at full strength — eight in all, sawing and hammering away on a menagerie of violins and keyboards and drums and guitars — and that, for much of the past decade, they've been tailoring their sonics to massive festival crowds and cavernous indoor spaces, the sound they produced in this little theater was enormous; it washed over the audience, all the way to the back of the building, and then up to the arched ceilings. And that only added to the euphoria.

Because there truly is something to be said about seeing a band this big in a venue this small. Already-massive songs like "Rebellion (Lies)" and "Neighborhood #2 (Laika)" became even larger, the bass rumbled and the strings stabbed, the chanted vocals of Régine Chassagne and Richard Reed Parry broke through and grabbed at you. At one point, even Butler noticed, because he proudly proclaimed this to be the most out-of-control show ever," and then tore the roof off the place with a thunderous take on "No Cars Go," which saw the band going six-wide on vocal harmonies.

They added extra oomph to songs both old ("In the Backseat," which slowly, gloriously hemorrhaged to a close; "Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)," which fell and then rose again on Butler's wiry guitar work) and new (an elastic take on "We Used To Wait," all handclaps and crescendos; a muscled, loose run through "Ready to Start") and played the rest with their trademarked madcap abandon which, given the size of the room, only appeared more madcap. And that intimacy was the key, whether it was when Butler waded out into the crowd during the encore or when he looked out into the outstretched hands, sighed, and said, "We can't tell you how good for the spirit it is to play a small show like this."

And he meant it. But it was equally beneficial to have witnessed it. This was the kind of show where dudes call up their friends and just hold the phone up in the air — a "You've got to be here! I can't believe you missed it!" type of thing. An outsider band somehow thrust into the mainstream, and rebelling against it the only way they know how: by playing long and loud, by shouting and sweating, and by wearing their hearts on their sleeves (this was, certainly, the only Grammy event in which the entertainment urged the Haitian government to sue the f---ing sh-- out of deposed dictator Jean-Claude Duvalier).

So perhaps it was only fitting that, during their final song — The Suburbs' "Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains)" — Butler asked to have all the lights in the venue be turned off. After all, the Grammys are all about hogging the spotlight. Arcade Fire finished their set in the dark.

Don't miss "Snooki & Sway: Live From the Grammys," a red-carpet live stream kicking off Sunday at 6 p.m. ET on MTV.com. And stick with us all Grammy night for coverage of the red carpet, the show, the afterparties and beyond!
