<P>Usher might not have known how big Justin Bieber would become when he discovered him a few years back, but he was pretty sure he had found something special. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:712878" width="240" height="211"></div><p> Since Bieber burst on the scene with his <i>My World</i> EP back in 2009, the 17-year-old has grown up with the world watching. He's gone from up-and-comer to full-fledged pop sensation, racking up chart-topping albums and a box-office hit and becoming an all-around mega-heartthrob &#8212; all in two years. Of course, with the good does come negative attention as well. Recently, Bieber was hit with a paternity lawsuit, which has since been dropped. Usher, no stranger to his own controversies, had these words for the Biebs: "Stay strong. And know that all of this comes with the territory." Aside from the drama, Usher is especially proud of Bieber's charitable side. His mentor said he "absolutely" knew the kid from Stratford, Ontario, had a big heart from the start. "To write a check is only half of it, but when you truly take on a responsibility to be a philanthropist, you accept an effort, and I really think that Pencils of Promise is something that has a very bright future," Usher told MTV News at an event for the charity, noting that Bieber is a only a small part of it. Usher &#8212; who appears on Bieber's new Christmas album, Under the Mistletoe &#8212; gives credit to the folks surrounding the teen superstar, including manager Scooter Braun. "Just judging from the determination and the will power of the entire team around Justin, I see a very, very promising [future] for him as a philanthropist," Usher said.</p>

Beyonce And Jay-Z Didn't Pay $1 Million For Hospital Floor

New York's Lenox Hill Hospital releases a statement denying reports that the couple rented an entire maternity floor.

<P>Despite the many rumors about the lengths Beyoncé and Jay-Z went to for security and secrecy around the birth of daughter Blue Ivy Carter, New York hospital Lenox Hill says the superstar couple was treated with just as much care as all their patients. In a statement released Monday (January 9), hospital spokesman Frank Danza said he was "troubled by the misinformation being circulated in some news media reports" and denied the rumor that Bey and Jay paid more than $1 million to rent a floor of the hospital for the birth. "The suggestion that the couple paid $1.3 million to rent an entire maternity floor is simply not true. The family is housed in an executive suite at the hospital and is being billed the standard rate for those accommodations," Danza said in the statement. "Our executive suites are available for any patient, including the food service and amenities provided to the Carter family." <CENTER></CENTER> Speaking to the concerns over beefed-up security and whether the celebrity baby disturbed other patients, Danza insisted that although Beyoncé and Jay-Z had personal bodyguards, the hospital maintained control over the situation. "We have made every effort to ensure minimal disruption to other families experiencing the births of their own children over the past three days. No security plan that we or the Carters' security team put in place would have prevented or delayed families from gaining access to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit," Danza continued in the statement. "Lenox Hill Hospital takes patient privacy and safety very seriously. And while we congratulate the Carter family on the birth of their child, we value the loyalty of ALL our patients and always strive to ensure a positive experience, knowing that the birth of a child is a wonderful moment producing memories of a lifetime." While the baby was reportedly born late Saturday night, the couple just released an official birth announcement Monday. "Hello Hello Baby Blue," the Carters said in a statement to MTV News. "We are happy to announce the arrival of our beautiful daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, born on Saturday, January 7, 2012. Her birth was emotional and extremely peaceful, we are in heaven. She was delivered naturally at a healthy 7 lbs and it was the best experience of both of our lives."</p>

Charlize Theron Covers W Magazine February 2012

Joining Brad Pitt as one half of the dual cover subjects, Charlize Theron graces the front page of the February 2012 issue of W magazine.

The Oscar-winning beauty looked radiant in a mesmerizing Mario Sorrenti shot spread while decked out in Bottega Veneta?s silk chiffon gown and Martin Katz 18k white gold and diamond earrings.

Meanwhile, highlights from Charlize's interview are as follows. For more, be sure to visit W!

On whether she has to like a character to play her (referring to her Mavis role in 'Young Adult'):
"I liked Mavis, but no, I don?t think I need to like my characters. I do think empathy is very important. It?s crucial to understand circumstance and story to grasp the role in a truthful manner. Your characters are like your children: Sometimes they make you proud, and other times, you think, Oh, really?! In Young Adult, I wanted to show some cringe-worthy moments that only women will get."

On whether she was always tall and blonde and beautiful:
"For the first eight years of my life, I didn?t have front teeth. I was pretty sick as an infant, and antibiotics rotted them. But then I started to take dance classes, and I eventually got some teeth [laughs]. When I was 16, I went to Milan to model."

On whether she always dreamt of being an actress:
"I wanted to be a ballerina, but I was too tall, and I had too many injuries. What I loved as a ballerina was telling stories, and I could also do that with acting, so I eventually moved to L.A."

On her audition for '2 Days in the Valley':
"I remember I was in a catsuit. I?d never auditioned before, and I almost brought a bottle of ketchup and squirted it all over myself for the scene where I got shot. I looked like a maniac. It was a dying scene, so I barged through the door and started crawling on the floor. I think they were too scared not to give me the role."

Tim Burton Had To 'Find The Tone' For 'Dark Shadows'

Director talks to MTV News about time travel, 3-D and skipping his homework to watch the melodramatic vampire soap.
By John Mitchell

Director Tim Burton has kept such a tight lid on his forthcoming big-screen adaptation of the late-'60s soap opera "Dark Shadows" that last week we were forced to imagine things we'd want to see in a trailer for the film because one hasn't even dropped yet.

News on the film has been scarce — until now! Last week, MTV's resident movie guru Josh Horowitz talked to Burton about his busy 2012, and the director was forced to dish on his biggest project of the year. Burton told MTV News he was busy "editing and doing effects" for the film now. Though the film will not be "an effects-heavy picture, it's still got stuff in there," he said.

At the BAFTA Britannia Awards late last year, MTV News talked to Burton's partner Helena Bonham Carter, who appears frequently in his films, including "Alice in Wonderland," "Sweeney Todd" and "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," and she told us that "Shadows" was a childhood obsession of Burton's. "This was a thing that he raced home to see when he was about age 10," she said. "So it was returning to his childhood roots of what he loved watching."

Burton echoed her comments, telling MTV, "People like Michelle [Pfeiffer] grew up watching it. Some of the cast knew about it, some didn't, but they were all game for it — getting into the weird spirit of what 'Dark Shadows' was. There was a generation of us who would run home from school to watch it. That's probably why we were such bad students. We should have been doing homework; we were watching 'Dark Shadows' instead."

"Shadows" bested "Spider-Man" to make the Elite Eight and is up against "The Dark Knight Rises" in round two of the MTV Movie Brawl 2012 — vote here!

For the director, the most difficult thing in bringing "Shadows" to the big screen has been mastering the tone of the melodramatic soap. "It was hard to put into words the tone it was. It had a weird seriousness, but it was funny in a way that wasn't really funny. We just had to feel our way through it to find the tone," Burton said. "We didn't do any real rehearsals, because the cast all came in at different times. But there was an old photo of the [original] cast which I always remembered, so a couple days before shooting, we got the whole cast together to take a similar shot so everyone could see each other and get that vibe from doing a group photo. That helped set the tone more than anything."

Burton didn't reveal much about the vampire flick's plot but did (somewhat) resolve a few lingering questions we've had about the film. Asked if the film's story — like that of the show — would include time travel, the director admitted that, while audiences will get to see the Collins family in the late-1700s, most of the film is set "in 1972, which to the era of 'Dark Shadows' is the modern era."

Elaborating further on time travel, Burton added, "For me, that's when the show kind of made me want to do homework. I was like, 'Wait a minute!' That came near the end of the trail of the series."

So it seems unlikely that the main story line resurrected for the early '90s remake of the series, which had Victoria Winters traveling through time to Collinwood circa Barnabas' (Johnny Depp) transformation into a vampire, will be incorporated here. Perhaps the trip back Burton refers to here is instead a flashback to show audiences how Angelique (Eva Green) used her evil magic to turn Barnabas into a creature of the night?

Burton also confirmed that the film will not be released in 3-D, as his version of "Alice" was. "No. It's the '70s, man. Only 'Frankenstein's Bloody Terror' was in 3-D," the director tells MTV News. "That's the only one I remember from that time."

Knowing that we won't have to wear a pair of funny glasses to get the full effect of "Dark Shadows" makes us even more excited for the May 11 release!

Are you excited that Burton and company are keeping the time-travel plot out of "Dark Shadows"? Sound off in the comments below and tweet me @JohnMitchell83 with your thoughts and suggestions for future columns!
